4D

(version September 16, 2007)

Combining the element of time with 3D introduces the idea of 4D. The terminology is catching on in number of exciting ways. We'll take a look at some examples in this section. 4D goes beyond the idea of an animation. We might be looking at data changing over time or demographics changing over time--something an animator think of approaching. The usage of the term 4D is still being defined. Look for changes and variations in usage. In some cases it's just very catchy and has nothing to do with looking at 3D over time. We have some exampels of that here.

Stage actors interact with projected video. The onstage performance only makes sense in being able to connect it with the projected images. From the Web site:

  • On Stage, performers interact with virtual images projected into space. The performing arts tradition fuses with new digital technology to create these illusions.
From the integration of cinema and stage performances to interactive video-conferencing experiences, the "virtual projections" of 4D art offer many new possibilities for the performing arts.
